Free Syria The U.S. in Syria is part of an 80-nation US-led force to defeat the Islamic State Coalition based in Iraq. They are under the 2001 Authorization for Use Military Force (AUMF). The US first entered N.E. Syria in 2014. They to backed a Syrian/Kurdish force; the Peoples’ Protection Units and, later, the Syrian Democratic Forces, battling the Islamic State.

US troops should have left Syria and Iraq long ago

A few thousand soldiers scattered in desert bases around a region increasingly hostile to their presence makes no sense. Washington must minimize its risks. To dig in and escalate would be a mistake that is likely to lead to more Americans killed. The mission that brought U.S. troops to Iraq and Syria – to destroy ISIS – has been accomplished. Residual policing of ISIS remnants can be undertaken from bases in Qatar, Kuwait and Turkey.
